Warden Notice 09/05 (03 October 2005)

The Holy month of Ramadhan will start later this week. The Islamic requirement that every Muslim must fast between sunrise and sunset during Ramadhan is strictly observed in Saudi Arabia. Any person caught drinking, eating or smoking in public during those hours in Ramadhan runs the risk of arrest and deportation.

Throughout the month we would advise against drawing unnecessary attention to yourself, and to observe modesty in your dress and behaviour.  It would be wise to follow requests from the Mutawwa, to avoid confrontation.

I would also like to draw your attention to the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice for Saudi Arabia, last updated on 7 September. You can read it in full on the FCO's website www.fco.gov.uk/travel and then selecting Saudi Arabia, or the Embassy website www.britishembassy.gov.uk/saudiarabia via the shortcut menu. Both websites can be personalised so you are notified when the items which interest you are changed.

Included below is part of the Travel Advice Summary:-

"There is a continuing high threat of terrorism in Saudi Arabia. We continue to believe that terrorists are planning further attacks, including against westerners and against places associated with westerners in Saudi Arabia. If you choose to travel to, or remain in, Saudi Arabia you should take all necessary steps to protect your safety and should make sure you have confidence in your individual security arrangements. You should maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in public places."

HM Consul
