Warden Notice 07/04
(15 July 2004)
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office revised the Travel
Advice for Saudi Arabia today, 15 July. It is available at www.fco.gov.uk/travel
or at the Embassy's web-site www.britishembassy.gov.uk/saudiarabia
via the shortcut menu.
The Travel Advice has been revised in the light of
the FCO's worldwide review of travel advice earlier this year (details
at www.fco.gov.uk/travel).
Following the review, the Foreign Secretary announced "that
in future in the case of intelligence-based terrorist threats, HMG
will advise against travel to a specific country only in situations
of extreme and imminent danger - if the terrorist threat is sufficiently
specific, large-scale or endemic to affect British nationals severely".
As a result, we have removed the reference in the
Travel Advice that advised British nationals against all but essential
travel to Saudi Arabia. The change is part of our policy to be as
open and descriptive as possible in order to allow British nationals
to make an informed decision about whether to travel. It should
not be seen as downgrading the threat in any way. We remain concerned
about the threat to British nationals in Saudi Arabia. There continues
to be a high threat from terrorism and we believe terrorists are
planning further attacks, including against Westerners and places
associated with Westerners.
If you choose to travel to, or remain in, Saudi Arabia,
you should take all necessary steps to protect your safety and should
make sure you have confidence in your individual security arrangements.
You should maintain a high level of vigilance, particularly in public
places frequented by foreigners. You should take sensible precautions
for your personal and vehicle safety.
We continue to keep our advice to you under continual
review.

William John Neil
HM Consul
